New from the Institute: The Craft of Management

Posted on Feb 4, 2011 | 6 Comments

Kenneth Hopper and William Hopper’s book The Puritan Gift explains that “managing can be learned only by working under a skilled practitioner in a non-academic setting and by observing and copying what he or she does.” The Writers-in-Residence at the Drucker Institute go on to say that this view was not unique to them, but had been shared by Peter Drucker. “Half a century ago,” they note, “it was implied by the word ‘practice’ in the title of Drucker’s The Practice of Management.”

William Hopper expanded on these ideas in a lecture he delivered in Claremont, which has been brought to life in this short cartoon. Here Hopper explains the “craft of management” and the value of looking back to old wisdom in order to move forward with new practices.

Not only is the domain of knowledge an art required for a good administrator. Administration considers it an intellectual professional practice which participates with intellectuals (Doctor, Engineer, Lawyer, to name a few) on a scientific basis in fiscal years as a coordinated whole.

So it is not fantasy to say that management is a science, because it corresponds to pure knowledge, knowing itself, to intellectual knowledge. Administration is an art, because it is the application of knowledge there. And administration is a technique; it is devoted to how to practice with skill, virtuosity and style.

Consequently, it is correct to think that the practical intellectual professions, also known as liberal, are arts, possessing deep roots based in science at the intersection of application and exercise. Thus we speak now of medical sciences, science of education, communication sciences and management sciences (According to Joseph wagon the concept of the professions stems from the decree of March 17, 1791, which allowed during the French Revolution the legal profession in France. WAGONS, Joseph. Les Liberal Professions. PUF, 1984. Page 5.).

VAGONE, Joseph. Les Professions Libérales. PUF, 1984. Pág. 5.).

A great little video that encapsulates the message of The Puritan Gift in a clever and fun way. A message, by the way, that many would do well today to heed.
